ICID

IAL is the Australian representative body of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID). ICID was established in 1950 as a non-profit, non-governmental international organisation with headquarters in New Delhi, India. The Commission is dedicated to enhancing the worldwide supply of food and fibre for all people by improving water and land management and the productivity of irrigated and drained lands through appropriate management of water, environment and application of irrigation, drainage and flood management techniques.
Australia joined ICID in 1952 and has since been actively associated with ICID activities at a national as well as an international level. The Australian National Committee hosted the 10th IEC in Canberra in 1969, the 34th IEC in Melbourne in 1983, the 5th Afro-Regional Conference in Townsville in 1985 and the 2nd Asian Regional Conference in Echuca in 2004.
Mr Ronald East (1959-62); Dr. J.S. Abbott (1962-65); Professor D.J. Constable (1987-90) and Dr. Hector Malano (2000 – 03) were the Vice Presidents.  Stephen Mills as Chairman of ANCID from 1998 – 2008 has led the Australian delegations to ICID. This role will now be the responsibility of the CEO of IAL and the Chairman of the ICID National Committee of Australia (ICID NCA). Chair of ICID NCA, Willem F. Vlotman, was elected Vice President of ICID for 2009 – 2012.
The National Committee of Australia is actively represented in 15 ICID work bodies. .A list of the current ICID work bodies with Australian representation can be downloaded at left. This list will be adjusted as circumstances dictate and changes will be communicated to ICID several months before the annual International Executive Council meetings (IEC).
